It’s the toughest station on the course: “Darting Doves” — a true pair, through the trees, left to right. You change extended choke tubes as you watch the targets make fools out of your friends.
Success at sporting clays is speed and timing; you need to take out the first target before the big tree; it’s a snap shot, but there’s no other way. The Competition balances naturally as you focus your thoughts, the time is now; you call “pull.”
The pair cuts knife blade thin through the trees, but everything’s on autopilot. The Competition comes to your shoulder smoothly as you swing. The tapered rib passes in front of the lead target, you touch the trigger and there’s a cloud of dust just before the tree. The recoil is soft, the porting keeps the barrel down and you nail the second clay on the other side with room to spare. The second pair falls the same; the third pair you grind extra-fine.
As you move to the next station, your friends sneak glances at the satin nickel receiver and figured walnut of your Franchi Competition. It’s good to have style, and it’s great to be at the top of your game.
Both the 712 and 720 Competitions operate with a rotary bolt design, which locks up like a high-powered rifle. Weighing approximately seven and six pounds respectively, the 712 and 720 Competitions are extremely light and quick handling. The Competition’s satin walnut stock is finished with a five-step process called WeatherCoat™. It not only makes the stock impervious to the harshest weather, but also dramatically enhances the figure and beauty of the walnut.
The Competition’s versatility makes it an ideal gun for hunting birds and shooting clay targets. Its sleek lines and good looks make it an attractive piece for skeet or trap, and at the same time it’s tough enough to weather any field conditions faced while hunting.
The Competition features a ported barrel to keep muzzle climb at a minimum, to aid second clay acquisition. In between stations the hard chrome extended choke tubes can be unscrewed by hand for a quick change out.
For a distinctive look even while setting in the club gun rack, the Competition sports the Franchi emblem and Franchi’s WeatherCoat™ identification on the pistol grip cap.
